ABC Wednesday, T for Transport and Travelling,

If you click on the slide you will see more details.

As we have a lot of water, much freight, consisting of, sand or gravel, is transported by boat. The boats travel as far as Germany or Belgium.

A very popular way of transport for persons is cycling of course. We have special cycle tracks. Almost every Dutch person has a bicycle, with the exception of most elderly people.

When I was young I often went away on my bycycle to cover long distances. My sister and I cycled from our homeplace in the Netherlands to Bristol in England, which took us 6 days. After our holiday of a month we decided to send our bikes to our home address, and we hitch hiked home. That took us two days!

I now use my bicycle for short distances, and I travel by bus, subway or train for longer distances. Public transport is 40 % cheaper for people over 65.

As I have a daughter in Australia I now often travel by plane.

ABC is created by Denise Nesbitt and a team of dedicated bloggers. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with T.

Wil...what an exciting life you led! You should write a book!
you can title it:

"Where There is Wil,There Is A Way"

I mostly travel for business - almost every other week - but I hardly make time to explore the places I visit. Yet I always make time to visit museums in which I have a special interest. Thank you for the slideshow which I greatly enjoyed.

You have your own form for transport in the Netherlands. I have seen cycling along the canals and it looks great fun.

Another aspect of Transportation in my post!

Most interesting post, Wil. About your travels all over the world. My traveling days are over. I did it when it was still safe to stick out your thumb along any highway in the middle of nowhere and jump in beside a total stranger and ride for days with them or as far as they went and then get out and repeat the whole process. We called it 'hitch hiking.'

Transportation of a very economic and environmentally friendly kind. We could all use a little more of cycles than cars.

As Carol said in the first comment, "Where there's a Wil, there's a way."
How true.
Love your slideshow, very comprehensive. Those river boats and barges are great.

this reminds me that as a child I always loved to watch the boats going by, and wonder what their end destination would be.

Hi Wil. I think we just sign in through the comments this week and not with Mr. Linky. Who needs him, anyway. :)

I really enjoyed traveling by bicycle when I was younger, but I never traveled the distance you did. But then I never hitch-hiked either. I'm very impressed with your adventurousness.

Great post, Wil. How old were you when you and your sister took that trip to Bristol?

Groetjes

I will cross with the ferry from Europoort at the end of the month again. I'm always looking forward to seeing all the sea-traffic as well!

I used to ride a bike a lot in my youth. Though never such a journey as you undertook there. I bet it was enjoyable.

I loved the pictures of the trikes - the ones with the huge box in front for two children look very hard to pedal though. Even if a lot of your country is flat!

An excellent "T", Reader Wil. I live out in the country, so travelling by car is my only option most of the time. But I just spent a weekend in Chicago, where I much preferred travelling by train and bus. Driving in the "big city" petrifies me:)

Excellent post, Wil. I'm taking up cycling again for the exercise and to get around as I don't drive anymore.

I love biking and would be lost without my bike - always wanted to do the Galloping Goose Trail across Canada which starts here on Vancouver Island at Mile One but don't have the stamina for such a long trip.
