ABC Wednesday, S for Support Stockings

A friend of mine, who is a Dutch artist invited me to the opening of one of the expositions she is taking part in. This time the subject was support stockings, which seems a bit unusual, for I use support stockings on long bus trips or flights, and I can say, that they are so ugly, that I don't want to show them. The thing is that all kind of medical devices like wheelchairs, rollators, are ugly but necessary. The same with hearing aids, spectacles and whatever article you can think of to help people live easier and more comfortable. All these aids are are experiencing a time of emancipation. There are hearing aids in all possible shapes and colours, beautiful spectacles, race wheelchairs and turbo rollators. Nobody needs to be ashamed for one's handicap. I didn't go to the exposition but I saw the support stockings on this websight: www.kunststeunkous.nl.

ABC is created by Denise Nesbitt. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with S.

Very clever art. However I would rather wear the kind you mentioned for your long trips than a few of these creations. But there were a few...

How ingenious! Some seem a bit unpractical, but most of them one could really wear! You are right they only think only about the functionality of the aid, and look very boring! Especially for kids and teens "decorating" whatever they would have to wear would be a great asset.

Well! This is quite unusual but certainly this is a product which is useful to many people.
An interesting idea for an art show.

Wil....this was interesting! My mother always wore support hose and they were ugly. It is one place that could use a creative mind and these are a good start!

I have to use them quite a lot myself - and you can now get them in all colours and all kinds of look. Nobody will never know. A bit expensive - but they last for a long time.

I like the creative use of a medical item in an artistic way. The more I blog the more I find the world is filled with inspiring people.

Oh, a most interesting subject for an art show, Wil. Your artist friend is very creative. You are right, no one has to be ashamed of their handicap, and decorative aids make things a bit more whimsical and fun. One still enjoys life and has fun, even if handicapped.

Renie

This one is a surprise to me. I would never have guessed it. Some of the designs on them are outlandish.

How unusual, they look more like leg warmers that dancers and etc would wear than support stocking/hose.

This is so clever and original. I guess bueaty is in the eye of the beholder...
Great post.

Great 'S'! This looks like such a fun exhibit. I think it conveys exactly what you've said, that nobody should be ashamed for needing a medical aid!

How true that is! I am amazed, looking back, how glasses have come along since that first pair of National Health blue plastic ugly frames that I had as a nine-year-old!

It's a very good thing that all these things have come into 'fashion' to help people to feel more comfortable and less different. I like the support stockings you show us - SO much nicer than the ones I wear on a long flight!

Funny how the older we get the more things we need to prop us up.
Guess we ought to just be glad they are there.
I agree with Patty on the leg warmer look.

Interesting stockings. I remember the leg warmers in the 80's.

This has to be one of the most unusual exhibits I've ever seen! If you have to wear them, why not make them fun?! It's good that people are being more open about medical devices and physical "helpers" like these. Thanks for sharing!

Fun s!
Next time I have to wear supports I will decorate them!

It's good that such aids are becoming acceptable. We can still get some things right, then.

Support stockings...maybe ugly but for a good benefit unless it is invented for more profit. Well, there has to be a profit. The reason why you need SS for long trip is to help you prevent from blood clot in your legs. Gee, I forgot the medical term.

Very fancy support stockings - some of them would be fun to wear just because of the art! Good post!!

What a great collection of support stockings. I think it's so important for all of us not to take ourselves too seriously. An exhibition such as this one releases us to see and feel the fun side of getting older. ;-)

Those made for a very interesting art show. Art is all about being unique and these told a special story.

Ziet er hier maar grijs uit bij ons, hopelijk blijft het toch nog droog.

Great exhibit. You're right - medical equipment is very ugly. The support stockings in the exhibit should be mass produced!

You're great at finding the unusual for our alphabet days.

The support stockings certainly have improved over the years; but better to wear them than acquire clots or thrombosis.

What a great idea! These are lovely. Are you planning to get some like these for our trip?
