1. Queen Elisabeth, Great Britain (ascended the throne on 2nd May 1953)
2. Queen Margaret, Denmark (ascended the throne on 14th January 1972)
3. Queen Beatrix , Netherlands (ascended the throne on 30th April 1980, after her mother Queen Juliana abdicated)

When most Americans hear the word "queen" these days, they immediately think of Queen Elizabeth II of England, whose lengthy reign and media-hounded royal family make newspaper headlines all over the world daily. But Queen Elizabeth is not the world’s only current, reigning queen—she’s not even the only queen in Europe.

Currently, three queens reign in Europe, and a fourth is close to the throne. The four are: Elizabeth of the House of Windsor, Queen of the United Kingdom; Margaret of the House of Holstein-Glucksburg, Queen of Denmark; Beatrix of the House of Orange-Nassau, Queen of the Netherlands; and Victoria, the crown princess of Sweden, who will inherit the country’s throne upon her father’s death. Historically, this is a unique circumstance.

Interesting post about queens. For sure when I hear the word queen I think of Queen Elizabeth, but that's because officially she rules over Canada too. ;-)

Well done, Wil! Since it's not Wednesday here yet, I'm still wondering what in the world I am going to use for "Q".

It's great to be reminded that Elizabeth is not the only European queen :) A most interesting post.

Interesting facts. When I am not really giving it much thought I am one of those Americans you speak of and whats worse, I expect to see them in fancy gowns all the time.

You're right, I really only knew of Queen Elizabeth. I'm pleased to be informed of the other 2, and the crown princess who will one day rule. Thanks for teaching me, as you so often do.

Quite right too not to overlook the other European Queens. Great way to illustrate your choice.

Nice to know there are so many Queens. Queen Elizabeth is our Queen too here in NZ.

Very cool! I always thought that Queens were so regal.

Queen Elizabeth does come to mind - although there was an accident near Queen Beatrix recently that was more than a little scary. Quality Q post!

In België is de wet ook veranderd
zodat we nu ook een koningin als troonopvolger kunnen hebben.

Gday Wil. very interesting post on Queens,I did know about the 3 Queens but when Queen is mentioned the 1st queen I think about is Elizabeth..

Why we have more queens than kings now, is it because of women's movement? I doubt it. But all three queens seems doing very well, better than the kings in the past.

This is royalty of the historical type. Always a pleasure.

We had Nixon, Bush, Bush, and of course a token Johnson. Or was it Johnston. LOL

Coming from the UK, Queen Liz is my first thought, too, but we do occasionally get news of the other Queens in Europe here. It is good to have it pointed out.
I remember reading of an Arab king, many years ago, having a little joke about Royalty. I can't remember the exact words, but something like:
'The time is coming when there'll only be five kings in the world - the king of England, the king of hearts, the king of clubs, the king of spades and the king of diamonds.'
Good to see he was wrong.

Very interesting, Reader Wil. I didn't realize that Sweden had a queen, too--I always learn something new here!

I see from your Sunday post that you also have some Angelique tulips; they are my favorite, so beautiful!

Very interesting post about royalty, and queens in particular! I did know there were other queens in Europe, but didn't know about the crown princess of Sweden!

Thanks for sharing!

Your Q word is ideal. Anything historical interests me. Novels I chose to read are always historical even if the story line isn't exact! I love your blog..
REALLY different and interesting!!

Lovely photographs. I am not a royalist but I have to admire our queen, who works so very hard and takes her job so seriously in spite of being in her eighties. I am sure the same can be said for your queen too.

I remember seeing billboards of Queen Beatrix all over Holland! She was waving with a huge smile and sitting on a bicycle! What a lady!

I did not know this Wil. I have always been intrigued with the Royal Family and now I have others to look into. I will go back and study your link some more. Thanks for this post.

A good reminder Wil that there are other queens besides Queen Elizabeth.
