Click to enlarge and pay attention to the roof of the restaurant!

July 2005, Norway, we spent our summer holiday with four cousins at our Norwegian cousin's not far from Lillehammer. Of course Lysgårdsbakkene was on our programme. We had a lovely "Kaffe" there. The ski jump of Lysgårdsbakkene was used for the Olympic Winter Games in 1994. Ski jumps are always an impressive sight for us Dutchies.

When the construction of the Lysgårdsbakkene jumping hills started in 1992, the hills had to be moved some meters north so that the American broadcaster CBS could get the best pictures available from their pre-chosen location.

A house in Lillehammer and something we don't have in the Netherlands, a decorated drain cover!

ABC is created by Denise Nesbitt. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar. This week we are looking for words beginning with "L".

Next week I hope to edit a post about Maihaugen, an Open Air Museum in Lillehammer.

Oh wow! Couldn't CBS figure something else out?

Those ski jumps are even more daunting without the snow! Wow.

Love the "green" roofs too...

The building with the growing roof is beautiful.

I envy you Europeans -- so close to so many different and interesting countries.

I can't do anything but thank you for that piece of advertising for Norway :you even told mes something I didn't know about how the the decisions for the locations were made :-)

PS One week after the Olympics I visited the US for three weeks. Suddenly we were popular... :-)

Oh, yes :) I was there for the olymics in -94. Great memorier :) And great pictures :)

You asked me what would happend to the old cars. Noone knows for sure. Somebody would like to keep it just like it is - and open a museum, while otherones would like to remove it because of the pollution.

I wish you an happy easter :)

I do remember those Olympics. I thought the name was fantastic. I love the living roof. Now and then we see in our newspapers that some business now has a living roof.

What a great post! Not that I'm surprised, your posts are always great. Those ski jumps do indeed look more daunting without snow! And the roof with it's own grass! That's so cool. Thanks for sharing all the lovely L things!

I like the puppy. Is he yours?

Shall love to see the ski building in winter covered with beautiful white snow.

Took my kids skiing last year, don't know if my husband will be keen for this year, though the kids love it.

Cheers,

Ann

A beautiful place.

Does the grass/weeds on the roff only grow so tall, or does someone have to get on the roof and clip the grass?

We're having winter like weather again, but hopefully it won't last. It snowed several times today, but it didn't stick, melted as soon as it hit the ground.

Interesting, Wil. I like the grassy roof. Re: moving the hills for CBS -- what folk will do for TV!

MY garage roof has grass like that - but not on purpose. It grows in the mulch left by wisteria vines whose old leaves and flowers have fallen between the arched ceramic tiles.

All of these photos are beautiful.

Wonderful shots of Lillehammer. Thanks for showing them. The ski jumps are pretty scary to me.

Janie said...

Can't believe how steep that ski jump is. I'd be terrified to go down that.
Some of the ski resort buildings in Utah have sod on the roofs, too.

Such a romantic name "Lillehammer." I too remember those olympics. Sorry CBS was such a pain.
Practical side of me wonders about maintaining that roof. Eco-friendly to say the least.

I like your post, many old houses in north Norway have turf roofs, they insolate against the winter cold.

What a view! I've watched them jump there on TV. It looks so steep on TV, but even more so in your pics without the snow. The restaurant is beautiful. I love the wood and the carving. The grass on the roof is unique.

Thank you for your comments on my blog. Please don't feel bad or think it harsh to express what you feel. Having read your profile I'm not surprised at all that you don't like war. None of us really do. There are wars everywhere all the time. I wish we could all just get along.

Janice Thomson said...

Gosh interesting they moved the hills - did not know that.

Beautiful Norway, I've been commenting here on this post for a while now, but it's the first time I really took a close look at these photos. :) Funny. Groetjes!

Wonderful post, It's nice to see the ski-jump with no snow.
And drain covers can be really gorgeous, we have a lot of different decors.

Great post!

It looks like a beautiful place :) I could not IMAGINE going down those steep jumps! I can't believe they moved them for CBS.. the American media has way too much influence in the world, I think.

The roof of the restaurant is great, but I REALLY love the gorgeous door :D

Wonderful pictures, Reader Wil. I remember the Olympics held in Lillehammer...I can't believe they had to move the hills just for a television network!
