L for Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia

To enlarge click on "View all images" and then on "original view".

Today we have come to the letter L and I chose Lizard Island for my L word!

We went to Lizard Island 27 kilometres off the coast of North Queensland in an amphibious plane, the pilot of which was a fantastic guide and host, for he had a big esky with all kind of delicious sandwiches, cakes, salades, fruit, coffee and tea bags, and for the children various drinks. We went swimming or snorkling and we had a walk around the island.

When Captain Cook explored the east coast of Australia he came across this island which would lateron named Lizard Island, on account of the great number of sand monitors. He noted the island was "mostly high land very rocky and barren". Cook climbed the island to the highest point, which is called Cook's Look nowadays. He discovered a reef of rocks extending farther than he could see. He noticed a passage in the reef labyrinth through which the Endeavour later escaped.
This is what he must have seen, for we did the same walk up to the highest point

Thanks to Mrs. Nesbitt, who has hosted this ABC game for the third round to the letter L for ABC Wednesday. For more ABC posts click on ABC picture in my side bar.Join us in this wonderful meme!

Lovely Lizard Islands. Capt. Cook came from where I live (Middlesbrough) - he was born in a little thatched cottage in a place called Marton and Stewart Park now houses his birthplace Museum!!

Great post, and thanks for your comments on my recent posts (what did you mean by "in for a change"??

What gorgeous children. You must miss them.

WE've just returned from Canada where we saw lots of sea-planes but didn't get to go in one.

Lizard Island - never knew of the island.
Great shots of your family. Looks like everyone had a great time. The name 'Lizard Island' is catchy, Cook's Look is also cool. Any lizards in the park?

I've only ventured as far as Cairns. We hoped to 'do' the Barrier Reef but we found our Time Share was way up on the Atherton Tablelands and we liked it so much up there that we hardly stirred! I'm in Newcastle (Oz).
