Sky Watch, Skating near the Windmills
This photo was taken three years ago, but this week we could have seen the same picture.Ithought it a good idea to show some of the Dutch skating fever all over the Netherland. This one is taken in Zuid-Holland,where I live near the mills.

ABC Wednesday, D for Dordrecht

In August last year a friend of mine and I went to Dordrecht for a walk through the town, which is very old and still well preserved. The weather was fine and our trip on the ferry from Krimpen aan den IJssel to Dordt was delightful. On arrival in Dordt we first saw a restaurant where we enjoyed our morning coffee and apple pie. Then we set off to see the town and take photos.You can see more details if you click on the photos.
Dordrecht historically in English named Dort, is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. It is the fourth largest city of the province, having a population of 118,601 in 2009. Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland and has a rich history and culture.

My daughter when she was a baby more than 40 years ago. Is her daughter going to look like her?
Last week Tuesday my daughter in Australia gave birth to a beautiful little daughter. I have this second granddaughter not seen yet, but I have booked a flight to Australia in July. The baby was born in a hospital some 300 kms from her home. To Dutch standards it's very far, and a long drive by car. In Australia it's quite common.

ABC Wednesday, B for Birthdays
Birthdays need to be celebrated. I think it is more important to celebrate a birthday than a successful exam, a promotion, or a victory. Because to celebrate a birthday means to say to someone: “Thank you for being you.” Celebrating a birthday is exalting life and being glad for it. On a birthday we do not say: “Thanks for what you did, or said, or accomplished.” No, we say: “Thank you for being born and being among us.”

Celebrating a birthday reminds us of the goodness of life, and in this spirit we really need to celebrate people’s birthdays every day, by showing gratitude, kindness, forgiveness, gentleness, and affection. These are ways of saying: “It’s good that you are alive; it’s good that you are walking with me on this earth. Let’s be glad and rejoice. This is the day that God has made for us to be and to be together.

There was even a time that some priests would not allow parents to name their children after film stars or football players. In many countries, where infant mortality is very high, parents only name their children when they reach the age in which the chances of survival begin to increase. Until that time they are referred to by the number of years they are.

ABC Wednesday, A for Amazing Animal Attitude
A for Amazing Animal Attitude!! The Scottish John Gray as Constable No 90, was obliged to have a watch dog.
He chose a Skye terrier, about 6 months old. What was the young puppy to be called? There was no doubt, he was called ‘Bobby’ after all he was a police dog!
Bobby now became part of John Gray’s life. In 1858 John Gray died.A few days after the funeral, just after the one o'clock gun had sounded, which was the time John Gray was used to have his meal at the Traill's restaurant, the customers there were surprised to see Bobby enter it. They recognized him and felt sorry for him. They gave him a bone. He accepted it and ran away to the churchyard to his master's grave. From then on this was repeated daily.He refused to leave his master's grave which he guarded for fourteen years, till his own death in 1872.
There are no statues of cats, but there are many remarkable stories about cats. Do you know the delightful Cornish story of The Mousehole Cat? And we had a cat who once walked with us to the end of the street and waited 5 hours for us to return. However we came home by another road. When we missed him, we went looking for him and asked the neighbours if they had seen him, then we remembered that he walked with us. We went to the place where we saw him last and there he was! He was sooo happy to see us. So I wouldn't say that cats are not loyal. I am a real catlover!!

ABC Wednesday, Z for Zorro
Zorro is a fictional character created in 1919 by New York-based pulp writer Johnston McCulley. The character has been featured in numerous books, films, television series, and other media.
Zorro (Spanish for fox) is the secret identity of Don Diego de la Vega , a nobleman and master living in the Spanish colonial era of California. The character has undergone changes through the years, but the typical image of him is a dashing black-clad masked outlaw who defends the people of the land against tyrannical officials and other villains. Not only is he much too cunning and foxlike for the bumbling authorities to catch, but he delights in publicly humiliating those same foes.

Monday Doorways, Utrecht
This is the door that gives access to the convent garden belonging to the Cathedral.
St. Martin's Cathedral, Utrecht, or Dom Church (Dutch: Domkerk) was the cathedral of the diocese of Utrecht during the Middle Ages. Once the country's largest church and only cathedral, dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, it has been a Protestant church since 1580. The building is the one church in the Netherlands that closely resembles the classic Gothic style as developed in France. All other Gothic churches in the Netherlands belong to one of the many regional variants. Unlike most of its French predecessors, the Dom Church has only one tower, the 112 m (368 ft) high Dom Tower, which is the hallmark of the city.
Over the doorway we can see St. Martin cutting his cloak with his sword, in two halves to give one of them to a cold, shivering beggar.

The year 2011 was a very turbulent, tempestuous one. It started with unbalanced weather all over the world. There was a flooded area in Queensland as large as Germany and France. For me this was all very scary as my daughter lives there. Her house was okay and dry, but she stayed with friends in a house on a hill surrounded by water. This was January. Then came the horrific tsunami in Japan, which shocked the world. Especially when it caused a meltdown in the nuclear plant of Fukushima.
There were earthquakes in New Zealand, in many countries in Asia, recently in Turkey and the Philippines. The peoples of the Arab world revolted against their rulers, most of them were dictators. Gadaffi was killed, so was Osama bin Laden.
Fortunately there was also more pleasant news, like the royal wedding of Kate and William in April.
