The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The complex is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing.

The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.

The Baths are a major tourist attraction and, together with the Grand Pump Room, receive more than one million visitors a year. It was featured on the 2005 TV programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the West Country. Visitors can see the Baths and Museum but cannot enter the water. An audio guide is available in several languages

ABC Wednesday, R for Romans

The Romans left their traces all over Great Britain. Think of the Hadrian Wall, of the City of Bath, think of London!! Even in Dover we found the remnants of a Roman Villa. Well see for yourself what great engineers the Romans were! They were important for Great Britain and also for other European countries like mine. Maybe they were even our ancestors, they certainly affected our languages these Romans.

Sunday Bridges, Great Britain, Oxford

Bridge of Sighs in Oxford. The main buildings at Hertford College are linked together by a corridor called the "Bridge of Sighs," built in 1913-14 and named after the Ponte dei Sospiri(= Italian for Bridge of Sighs) in Venice.
A common myth states that it was the students who named this bridge "bridge of sighs," as the context of its existing within the college grounds means that the "sighs" are those of pre-exam students.

Psalms Challenge, Psalm 19

1 The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

2 Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.

***********************************************************
3 There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

ABC Wednesday, Q for Quakers

Posted by Picasa

Sorry for the poor quality of these old photos.

When I was still a student I had no money to go on expensive holidays. So each summer I went to an international ecumenical workcamp, where I met students and other young adults from all over the world. In the summer of 1956 I went to England with my sister. We cycled from the Netherlands to Belgium and took the ferry to Dover. From Dover we cycled to Longwellgreen ( between Bristol and Bath)in 5 days. The workcamp was a Quaker camp. Every day before we went to work, we had a short reading from one of the many holy books. This is what I learned about the Quakers:

The foundation of the community is the Silent Meeting. They observe together silence in which they can get nearer to God and each other. This was mainly meditating, which we as regular church goers were not used to do. The idea was great, however.

Here is a photo of our fellow campers, consisting of English, Welsh, German, Swedish, Spanish, Libanese, Arabic Israelis, American and Turkish campers and me as only Dutch girl.

The way of the Quakers has its roots in Christianity , but it is inspired by various religions and ways of life. They are aimed at the personal religious experiences and not at confessions of faith. They called that the Inner Light.

Sincerity, equality, simplicity and peace are the most important values.(I agree with that.)

In the Quaker community there are no leaders, pastors, ministers, because they believe that everyone is capable to experience God. (I am not sure about that.)

The Quakers take their identity mainly from a number of statements. The most important one is the Statement of Peace.

They reject emphatically all wars and wartime activities, regardless of the aim or pretence that caused them.( that is a difficult one.)

The spirit of Christ is persistent and cannot inspire us to love our enemy at one moment, and lateron urge us to kill the enemy.(Yes that is contradictory, but Ghandi
said the same, and I think nonviolent resistance is allowed)

The Religious Society of Friends began in England in the late 1640s, in a context of social upheaval which included increasing dissatisfaction with the established church, the execution of the king, and the rise of Nonconformist movements.
The founder of Quakerism is generally accepted to have been George Fox.

Psalms Challenge, Psalm 18

18:

1 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.

ABC Wednesday, P for Pieck

The Dutch artist Anton Pieck was born in Den Helder on 19th April 1895.At the age of six he and his twin brother took lessons in drawing. When he was seventeen he became an art master, which he was for forty years.

During WWI he was a soldier staying in Amersfoort, where he drew many drawings.
He died on 24th November 1987 at the age of 92.

Anton Pieck was inspired by the past.He didn't like the time in which he lived. He lived in a romantic past. His work is full of humour. He loved to draw fairy tales and romantic scenes.
Was he an artist or a craftsman? He himself said that he was a craftsman. He was an illustrator with a very special way of drawing.

He was asked to help designing the fairy-tale park of the Efteling
Efteling is the largest theme park in the Netherlands, and as it opened in 1952, it is one of the oldest theme parks in the world. Efteling is located in the south of the Netherlands.

In over fifty years the park has evolved from a nature park with playground and a Fairy Tale Forest, into a full-size theme park along the lines of Disneyland. It is twice as large as the original Disneyland park and predates it by three years. Nowadays, Efteling caters to both children and adults with its cultural, romantic and nostalgic themes and its variety of amusement ride
.

That Was The Week That Was

"That Was The Week That Was" was a satirical program on the BBC in the sixties. However, if I look back at the past week, I cannot find much humor in the events that presented it to us. First the terrible tornado in the south-east of the USA, than a happy occasion like the Royal Wedding, yesterday the bombardment on Khadafi's house, killing his son and three grandchildren, then there is the situation in Syria and the whole Arab world, and this morning we all saw the news that Osama bin Laden was killed. People are glad that this cruel man is dead. Isn't it terrible that we should be glad that somebody is killed, even if he deserved it? It asks for revenge and hatred. The death of any tyrant is cause for satisfaction for one group and cause for fury, anger and revenge for his friends. I am glad for President Obama, at the same time I hope that new terroristic attacks will not follow this event. Will it ever stop?

Sunday Bridges, Netherlands, Windmills.

I stay with the windmills, where I met Kay from Canada. This bridge leads to the visitors'mill in which you can get a fairly good idea what it was like to live and work there. Every tourist can hear an explanation of daily life in the mill. It is to be heard in various languages. When I came there for the first time it was the miller himself who led us around. He told that living in a mill was very cold in winter as the children slept on a higher floor than mum and dad. The parents slept in the tiny living space in a box bed, often with a kind of cot on a shelf for the baby . Mind you these mills were used to pump the water away from the polder and to prevent the people from drowning.
