Wikipedia says:
"Ot and Sien( pronounce "ot" like in "lot", and "Sien" like "scene") are the main characters in a series of Dutch children's tales that were very popular in the first half of the twentieth century.Ot is a little boy and Sien is a little girl The first series appeared in 1902. The second series followed in 1904. The author acted on the inspiration of Jan Ligthart, who had the intention to expose young people to what he considered a healthy daily family life. The illustrations were made by Cornelis Jetses."
They still are very beautiful even if they are old-fashioned.They are the books I was taught with in such a way that I became a passionate reader.



 

"After WWII the stories of Ot and Sien gradually went out of fashion and they were often ridiculed for the unrealistic picture they gave of life in the province. A century after their appearance there is a revival in the interest for the publications and in 2004 an exposition was held, focusing mostly on the artwork by Jetses."
These books are not used in schools anymore. Kids prefer Harry Potter now.

Weekend Reflections, the Isle of Møn

When we stayed on on Møn in Denmark ( see post of 12 October)we went for a walk in the surroundings of the camp site every evening after supper. The forest was beautiful and the trees were full of life. There were many birds, which we could hear, but not see. We heard the call of a grouse in the distance. Then we came to this water which was perfectly still and showed us the reflection of the trees surrounding it. This island is full of surprises! A little bit further we saw a deer standing in the middle of the path looking at us. We didn't move, not even to take a photo. It was so beautiful!
This photo was taken in Denmark in early May 2002, and the trees got new leaves. The weather was nice and warm then.

ABC Wednesday, N for Nyvang

When my sister, her husband and I stayed in Denmark in 2003, we visited Nyvang with our Danish friend. Here we had lunch with him in Nyvang park.

This park is situated on the Isle of Sjaelland/ Zealand( this has nothing to do with New Zealand, which was named after the Dutch province of Zeeland). The Co-operative Village Nyvang in Denmark is a historical centre of experience located in aesthetic surroundings five kilometres from Holbæk.It covers the period from 1870 to 1950. Those were the years that the the co-operative movement had its heyday.
We first saw the mainbuilding, then after a lovely walk the dairy, the smithy and finally the farm, which you can see on the two last photos. My sister, brother-in-law and I were the guests of honour and got coffee in the livingroom. It was there that we met our friend's cousin, who performed the part of farmer's wife.
This year she and her husband, who is the manager of the park, came to see me here. We went to Gouda to see the church. Last year they came here as well and then we went to the windmills.

Weekend Reflections: Hineh mah tov...How good is it...

Dina sent me an e-mail about the Hebrew words "Hine mah tov..."Of course I looked it up and the meaning of these words are great and wonderful! The past two days were all dedicated to the Chili miners. The whole world was watching, many people were praying and everybody was hoping and now we are all singing and many of us are praising the Lord of all life. Thank you for this link Dina!

Miners

The rescue operation of the 33 miners, who were trapped 600 metres under ground in a mine in Chili! Sorry but I got it only in Dutch.The first four miners are up now and it will take a day before they all are rescued. The fittest men go first because they don't panick easily. And after being united with their families they go to hospital where they will be examined thoroughly

ABC Wednesday, M for Murals on Møn

My husband, children and myself stayed on the campsite of Møns Klint on the Isle of Møn in Denmark in 1981 for the first time.The children loved it and so did we. The weather was beautiful and we went swimming every day. The next year we went again, and after that we visited the island three other times. The weather was always great. On the beach we found all kind of fossils.On our walks we saw more wildlife than we ever did in my country. Once we had an encounter with a deer.
There is so much to see on this Danish island.


Møn is known for its natural beauty, good beaches, fresco-decorated churches, Stone Age and Bronze Age passage graves and monuments, and Møns Klint ("The White Cliffs of Møn"), the island's most popular attraction.
Møn has a number of interesting churches decorated with frescos. Fanefjord Church dates back to the 13th century, and has a set of famous frescoes painted in 1450 by the Elmelunde Master. Elmelunde Church is the oldest church on Møn, with parts dating from the start of the 12th century. Keldby Church has a unique altarpiece and is richly decorated with frescos.

It's a pity that have only been at a few places in Leiden. I visited several times a museum and I studied English for some years, but I know that Leiden is a very beautiful city.The city of Leiden has a long history: university town since 1575, Leiden houses Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Centre. It is twinned with Oxford, the location of England's oldest university.Many members of our royal family studied here, including our Queen Beatrix, who studied law.

In 1572, the city sided with the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule and played an important role in the Eighty Years' War, which ended in 1648 and as a result of this war the Netherlands became an independent republic under the leadership of the Prince of Orange.

Besieged from May until October 1574 by the Spanish, Leiden was relieved by the cutting of the dikes, thus enabling ships to carry provisions to the inhabitants of the flooded town.

As a reward for the heroic defence of the previous year, the University of Leiden was founded by William I of Orange in 1575. Yearly on 3 October, the end of the siege is still celebrated in Leiden. Tradition tells that the citizens were offered the choice between a university and a certain exemption from taxes and chose the university.

The siege is notable also for being the first instance in Europe of the issuance of paper money, with paper taken from prayer books being stamped using coin dies when silver ran out.

Townhall, Leiden

Bench of the Week, Hoenderloo, Holiday Park

 
 
 

These benches were all in the holiday park where I spent a few days with my family this year. See post of 6th September!

My benches were all empty because it was early April and too cold to sit outside. And like Malyss, I also prefer empty benches because the bench is better to see and people often don't like to appear on internet.
