Our World Tuesday., ABC Wednesday, U for Unesco

A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a site that has been nominated for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's international World Heritage program.

The program aims to catalogue and preserve sites of outstanding importance, either cultural or natural, to the common heritage of humankind.

All of these sites I have seen in reality and taken photos of, only the photos of Great Barrier Reef are from Steve Parish.

The Bent Pyramid is a unique example of early pyramid development in Egypt, about 2596 BCE. This was the second pyramid built by Sneferu.

There are three pyramids at Giza, each of which once had an adjoining mortuary temple. Attached to this temple would have been a covered causeway descending down to a valley temple, near the Nile. The 'great' pyramid itself is truly an astonishing work of engineering skill - for over four thousands years, until the modern era, it was the tallest building in the world.

The Pyramid of Djoser(Zoser), or step pyramid is an archeological remain in the Saqqara necropolis, Egypt, northwest of the city of Memphis. It was built for the burial of Pharaoh Djoser by his vizier Imhotep, during the 27th century BC.

Our World Tuesday., ABC Wednesday, S for Soestdijk Palace

We do not know how old the palace is.We do know that it was bought by Cornelis de Graeff mayor of Amsterdam in 1638.  Mary Stuart  married stadtholder Willem III of Orange. She was a daughter of the English King James II. She and Willem III became the ruling couple William III and Mary II, who died in 1694 and William died in 1702. They had no children.

They were the first members of the House of Orange to live at Soestdijk Palace. The princes of Orange were stadtholders till Napoleon was defeated. His brother had been proclaimed king of the Netherlands in 1806. So our first king was a Bonaparte, a Frenchman.

As soon as William of Orange, who had spent his exile in England, returned to the Netherlands after the defeat of Napoleon,  the Dutch wanted him to become king of the Netherlands and Belgium, which became independent later.

The kingdom of the Netherlands is now 200 years old and has known seven ruling monarchs: first three kings, then three queens and now a king again.

Queen Juliana, grandmother of our king, had lived in Soestdijk until she died. Her children had lived in this palace until they got married. Queen Beatrix, mother of our king, abdicated in 2013 in favour of her son Willem Alexander, who lives in a palace in the Hague.

We don't know what is going to happen with this beautiful palace.

Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, Z for Zutphen

Zutphen is an old city, which has seen a turbulent past and is already mentioned by the Romans. It has been inhabited continuously for 1700 years now. It is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands.
In about 800 the settlement was incorperated in the Frankish Empire.
In the 9th century Zutphen was destroyed by the Vikings. After this a round ring-wall and moat were built by the end of that century.

Borrowed from "Kijk op Zutphen"

In 1284 and 1336 large parts of the town were burnt down, which resulted   in the construction of brick buildings. Zutphen became a member of the Hanse league, a co-operation of traders and cities  particularly in North Germany.
The 16th century  became very difficult for Zutphen due to the rise of other cities and the Eighty Years'War with Spain.
On 10 June 1572 the town was occupied by a brother- in- law of William of Orange, but in November the Spaniards came back and killed hundreds of the inhabitants. This is called The Massacre of Zutphen.
