ABC Wednesday

Posted by Picasa
Roger writes : "If you’ve followed my blog at all, you know that, for the past four years or so, I’ve participating in something called ABC Wednesday, in which people, literally from around the world, post an item – pictures, poems, essays that in someway describe each letter of the alphabet, in turn.
It was started about six years ago by one Denise Nesbitt from England. Initially, she was doing it all - writing the weekly introductions, visiting all the folks who came to the site, making sure they were abiding by the rules. At some point, she recruited a team of her followers to do some of the intro writing and visiting, which eventually included me.
Then a couple rounds ago, she was wondering if she should give up, because she was getting a little burned out. So I became the administrator, assigning who reads which posts, making sure somebody is writing the introductions (and writing them myself, when necessary) and inserting the link that allows everyone to participate. Also having to play bad cop when someone grossly violates the simple rules.
I remember my first post, K is for the Keating Five. It was somewhat political, I suppose, and unlike what other people were writing, so I wasn’t sure how well it would be accepted; I guess it was fine.
The Netiquette for the site is this:
1. Post something on your non-commercial blog/webpage having something to do with the letter of the week. Use your imagination. Put a link to ABC Wednesday in your post and/or put up the logo.
2. Come to the aBC Wednesday site and link the SPECIFIC link to the Linky thing. It’ll be available around 4 p.m., Greenwich Mean Time each Tuesday, which is 11 a.m. or noon in the Eastern part of the United States.
3. Try and visit at least 5 other participants…and comment on their posts. The more sites you do visit, the more comments you will probably get.

Bloggers, consider giving it a try, if this sounds interesting. We’ll be starting with A again in a couple weeks."

 I will add this:
I have been taking part in several memes, and the one Roger is writing
about, is the one I like  best. It's educational, interesting and gave me the opportunity to meet 5 of my fellow bloggers, which was great. They came from Canada, Greece, Israel , the Netherlands, and the USA
.

Allendale Gardens

When we entered this park we had immediately the feeling that this was a very special place, not just a park.To begin with we had a Devonshire tea with scones and strawberry jam and of course clotted cream. The owners of the park told us a bit of the history of the park.
The park was created and designed by the owners themselves. The park was dedicated to their little son who died at the age of six. Every inch of the garden radiates love and care.

The information about the park:
The two and a half hectares (6 acres) of landscaped gardens and lawns sit beside 26 hectares (16 acres) of cool temperate rainforest at Edith Creek. Choose from a number of walking paths, including 10, 15 and 30-minute walks. The paths weave through lovely tree fern glades, eucalyptus and blackwood trees. The forest walk includes a rare and endangered fern species known as hypolepus distans. This is the only substantial find across Australia of this species. In the gardens, different plants feature every month and a garden of 16th and 17th century roses has been developed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the gardens.
Sit down by the natural stream that runs through the property and see if you can spot the resident platypus( we didn't see it!). Notice the pheasants, peacocks, guinea fowl and pigeons as they wander freely. Enjoy a Devonshire tea in the gardens and look through the Garden Gallery where you will find postcards, posters and books as well as a DVD of the gardens.
We thank Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC, and we must thank Roger too for the weekly job to find  ten bloggers for each of the ABC Team members  to visit and to read their posts. ABC Wednesday, A for Australian

As I am now in Australia, I dedicate this post to this fabulous continent and its people!

This song was sung in 2000 at the opening of the Olympic Games in Sydney.
It was so impressive to see the original inhabitants of Australia singing this together
with the descendants of Europeans who came here after 1770 when James Cook arrived.

I came from the dream-time, from the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flame.
I stood upon the rocky shore, I watched the tall ships come.
For forty thousand years I’ve been the first Australian.

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

I came upon the prison ship, bowed down by iron chains.
I cleared the land, endured the lash and waited for the rains.
I’m a settler, I’m a farmer’s wife on a dry and barren run
A convict then a free man, I became Australian.

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

I’m the daughter of a digger who sought the mother lode
The girl became a woman on the long and dusty road
I’m a child of the depression, I saw the good times come
I’m a bushy, I’m a battler, I am Australian

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

I’m a teller of stories, I’m a singer of songs
I am Albert Namatjira, I paint the ghostly gums
I am Clancy on his horse, I’m Ned Kelly on the run
I’m the one who waltzed Matilda, I am Australian

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

I’m the hot wind from the desert, I’m the black soil of the plains
I’m the mountains and the valleys, I’m the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky, the rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land, I am Australian

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I am, you are, we are Australian.
We are one .. We are many .. We are Australian!

ABC Wednesday, A for Amazing Animal Attitude

A for Amazing Animal Attitude!! The Scottish John Gray as Constable No 90, was obliged to have a watch dog.
He chose a Skye terrier, about 6 months old. What was the young puppy to be called? There was no doubt, he was called ‘Bobby’ after all he was a police dog!

Bobby now became part of John Gray’s life. In 1858 John Gray died.A few days after the funeral, just after the one o'clock gun had sounded, which was the time John Gray was used to have his meal at the Traill's restaurant, the customers there were surprised to see Bobby enter it. They recognized him and felt sorry for him. They gave him a bone. He accepted it and ran away to the churchyard to his master's grave. From then on this was repeated daily. He refused to leave his master's grave which he guarded for fourteen years, till his own death in 1872.

There are no statues of cats, but there are many remarkable stories about cats. Do you know the delightful Cornish story of The Mousehole Cat? And we had a cat who once walked with us to the end of the street and waited 5 hours for us to return. However we came home by another road. When we missed him, we went looking for him and asked the neighbours if they had seen him, then we remembered that he walked with us. We went to the place where we saw him last and there he was! He was sooo happy to see us. So I wouldn't say that cats are not loyal. I am a real catlover!!

that's' My World, ABC Wednesday, A for Noah's Ark

This video shows the Dutch carpenter Johan Huibers is building a seaworthy replica of Noah's Ark and why he is doing this. This replica of Noah's Ark is being built to approximately one-half of the size specifications given in the Old Testament. Inside there are life-size statues of elephants and a giraffe to welcome the visitors. A small theater showing a film on the life of Noah is tucked under the keel, and the nearly finished top deck will soon house a petting zoo with lambs, chickens, goats, and a camel. Passengers can sail up and down Holland's canals while exploring the giant bark.

Noah's Ark (Hebrew: תֵּבַת נֹחַ‎, Tebhath Noaḥ in Classical Hebrew; Tevat Noakh in Modern Hebrew) is the vessel which, according to the Book of Genesis (chapters 6-9) and the Quran (surah Hud), was built by Noah at God's command to save himself, his family, and the world's animals from a worldwide deluge.

God, seeing the wickedness of man, is grieved by his creation and resolves to send a great flood. He sees that Noah is a man "righteous in his generation," and gives him detailed instructions for the Ark. When the animals are safe on board God sends the Flood, which rises until all the mountains are covered and all life is destroyed. At the height of the flood the Ark rests on the mountains, the waters abate, and dry land reappears. Noah, his family, and the animals leave the Ark, and God vows to never again send a flood to destroy the Earth.

that's My World, ABC Wednesday, A for Amersfoort

Amersfoort is a municipality and the second largest city of the province of Utrecht in central Netherlands. The city is growing quickly but has a well-preserved and protected medieval centre. Amersfoort is one of the largest railway junctions in the country, because of its location on two of the Netherlands' main east-west and north-south rail lines. The town celebrated its 750th birthday in 2009.

ABC Wednesday, A for Amazing, Astonishing, Absurd.

Posted by Picasa

A for Amazing, Astonishing, Absurd...

It was a nice and sunny day and everybody in the lawyer’s office was in a good mood. They were cheerfully talking and sipping their coffee, when the door opened and a man entered the office, limping. One of his legs was in a cast, one of his arms was in a sling. He looked a wreck. One of the lawyers got up, put his coffee cup down and said: “ Mr.Brown, I presume!”. The man nodded and spoke with a hoarse voice; “Are you mr. Deed , the lawyer who will give me legal aid and defend my case ?”
“Yes that’s me. Could you tell me what happened?”
“I was attacked , while I was working in an old house, and suddenly this little old lady entered the room and pointed a gun at me. I was so frightened that I ran to the balcony and jumped off it. I broke my leg and an arm”.
Mr. Deed: “What were you doing in the house, are you an electrician or a plumber ?”
Mr. Brown:”No.”
Mr.Deed:”Are you insured?”
Mr. Brown: “No, that’s not possible with the kind of work I do…”
Mr.Deed( looking puzzled):”What time was it ?”
Mr.Brown:”It was two o’clock!”
Mr. Deed:”Ah two o’clock in the afternoon and then…”
Mr.Brown:”No no no…It was two o’clock at night!”
With a look of unbelieve the lawyer answered :”OH… but then you were committing .....burglary??"
MrBrown:” Uh… well yea that’s my job. The fact is that because of that little old lady I haven’t been able to work for many weeks and apart from that I had to pay the doctor and therefore I want her to pay for all my expenses. Besides it’s illegal to possess a gun…. Will you assist me when I take the matter to court?”
Mr.Deed:”Well…okay “
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------At court
Mr. Deed claimed that Mr. Brown lost a lot of money by the action of the little old lady, who was in illegal possession of a gun. The old lady said that she thought she was entitled to defend her house against intruders. True, but not with a gun even if it proved to be unloaded. She should have used…uh… her fists(???) Anyway she lost the lawsuit and was fined… one Euro.(the last part of the story was made up... sorry)

He might have been successful...
A couple of years ago the always so peaceful and quiet village, where I live, was startled by the news that a real crime had occurred here. Everybody talked about it. It was in all the local newspapers, even on TV.
Before I begin telling you the story, I first have to explain how the situation is in our small shopping centre. In one of the shops we have a small sub post office in one of the corners. There is always a lady helping at the desk. She knows everybody in our village, but on the afternoon of a certain day in summer a man, whom she didn't know, stood waiting in the queue. She didn't pay too much attention to him, because she was rather busy, but the shopkeeper noticed that the newcomer was a bit nervous and had shifty eyes. He also held his right hand in the pocket of his jacket. The man waited until the last customer had left, then he went to the desk and asked in a rough voice :"Money...money ... quick..."He took his hand out of his pocket and waved with something which looked like a gun." Money... money... come on... hurry up..." The lady behind the desk responded coolly:"Sorry sir, I am afraid we haven't got any money ". Now the man got really nervous and desperately he cried : "Money in safe!" She answered:"No, I haven't got the key!" At this point John, the shopkeeper jumped over the counter and tried to catch the man by his coat. The so-called bankrobber startled and escaped through the backdoor, dropping his gun. The shopkeeper of the shop opposite the post office heard the noise and ran out of his shop. John signalled to him that he had to ring the police, that's 1-1-2 for emergencies, while he continued pursuing the culprit. The police were very soon at the crime scene and were looking everywhere, there was even a helicopter trying to find him, but all in vain. They never found him! And since that time there haven't been any other "armed" robberies. The silly-billy had probably learnt his lesson. He might have been successful with a real gun, instead of the toy gun he left behind.!!

ABC Wednesday A for Awards

These are almost all the awards I got during the two years I am blogging at blogspot. They were given to me by my dear blogging friends. In the beginning I showed them on my blog, but there were too many, besides it took quite some time to pass the award on to 5, or 7 or more bloggers. So I decided to store them. I am very grateful that so many people thought me worthy enough to give me one of these beautiful awards. Thank you so much! I am only not going to pass awards on, I like you all just as much, my friends.
ABC has started again and I thank the team of Denise Nesbitt for this meme. For more entries please use the logo in the sidebar.

Anmatyerre, Australian Spirit or....?

Spring cleaning has its advantages. Among other things, I found several Australian art calendars. One of them is dedicated to the work of Sakshi Anmatyerre. And I hope that you find the pictures as beautiful as I do in spite of the allegations expressed in Daily Telegraph London.

Sakshi Anmatyerre is an Australian spirit, a traveller in this great country, who records the land and its stories, interpreting them in dazzling colours and with the intuitive eye and sure hand of a master painter. In him is the harmonious meeting of cultures, ancient and modern. Through his paintings, which he creates using modern materials and techniques, he expresses his love and respect for these ancient islands, Australia- the people and the wild places and creatures. He is the proud father of three boys and a girl, and to them he passes his wisdom, his lore and his stories. But each startlingly beautiful painting tells its own story and to each person the story is different- it belongs to the beholder alone. But what to think of this article???

"By David Rennie in Sydney
AUSTRALIA'S aboriginal art industry, has been shaken by an allegation that one of its brightest stars, Sakshi Anmatyerre, is in fact an Indian from Calcutta. ABC, Australia's state television station, reported that Mr Anmatyerre had changed his name .Mr Anmatyerre numbers the actor Paul Hogan, the Sultan of Brunei and members of the Packer media dynasty among his clients. His work also appears on a range of best-selling postcards.Leading dealers recently met to discuss a system of authentication and ratings and nominated the Sydney dealer Adrian Newstead to act as their spokesman. Mr Newstead admitted yesterday that, if the allegations about Mr Anmatyerre are true, his paintings, while no less visually appealing than they were before, are now "not worth a brass razoo". (Daily Telegraph London)
