This Sunday and Monday we celebrate Whit Sunday and Whit Monday( or Whitsuntide)

It's the birth of the Christian Church for anybody who believes in Jesus Christ.

Whit weekend is usually the first holiday weekend of the year with any hope of decent weather, and a fine Whit Monday, which is now called " Late Spring Bank Holiday!" in England,will see families flocking to the coast or countryside.

THE ORIGINS OF THE FESTIVAL
Pentecost or Whitsun is observed on the seventh Sunday after Easter. The word Pentecost has its roots in the Greek "pentekoste" meaning the fiftieth day after Easter. Whit Sunday commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of flames to the Apostles, as recorded in the New Testament. The recent adoption of a Late Spring Bank Holiday on the last Monday in May is an attempt to deal with the fact that Whitsuntide is a moveable feast dependent on the date of Easter. Although it is no longer necessarily at the church's Whitsuntide, the general public still refers to this holiday as "Whit Monday." This is an old post, but I thought I could use it again. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also called the Church of the Resurrection by Eastern Christians, is a church within the walled Old City of Jerusalem.
The site is venerated as Golgotha (the Hill of Calvary), where Jesus was crucified, and is said also to contain the place where Jesus was buried (the sepulchre). The church has been an important Christian pilgrimage destination since at least the 4th century, as the purported site of the resurrection of Jesus. Today it also serves as the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, while control of the building is shared between several Christian churches and secular entities in complicated arrangements essentially unchanged for centuries. Today, the church is home to Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. Anglican and Protestant Christians have no permanent presence in the church.

ABC Wednesday, R of Rescue, Resistance to Repression

One of the most remarkable stories I heard in Jerusalem, was the rescue of a great part of the Jewish population in Denmark during World War II.

On October 1st 1943 Nazi leader Adolf Hitler ordered Danish Jews to be arrested and deported. The Danish resistance movement with the assistance of many ordinary Danish citizens evacuated about 8,000 Danish Jews in fishing boats and other small craft to nearby neutral Sweden during ten nights. You can read this on the memorial stone.
The Danish King was very brave. When the Jewish Danes were forced to wear the yellow star of David, he also wore a yellow star and many others did so. This confused the Nazis.

Wikipedia says:
"The rescue allowed the vast majority of Denmark's Jewish population to avoid capture by the Nazis and is considered to be one of the largest actions of collective resistance to repression in the countries occupied by Nazi Germany. As a result of the rescue and Danish intercession on behalf of the 5% of Danish Jews who were deported to Theresienstadt transit camp in Bohemia, over 99% of Denmark's Jewish population survived the Holocaust."

HAPPY MOTHER''S DAY to all mothers who read my blog!

Tomorrow we celebrate Mother's Day. Like in the UK we celebrate it on the second Sunday in May.
My daughter in Australia sent me a card from Oxfam saying that my present was a gift to the midwives in Laos. This is part of a world-changing program called Oxfam Unwrapped. I am very happy with this gift!! The fact that my children became good mothers, who also care for the rest of the world and think of such a gift, makes me proud of them and happy.
She wrote on it:"From one mother to another mother for many other mothers."

Wikipedia says:"UK holds the prestige of being the first country in the world to dedicate a special day for mothers It started when the Roman and British Empire converted to Christianity."

The Q is an extremely difficult letter, especially for somebody who wants to dedicate her posts to Israel for the next few weeks, but I found the word Quarter. The Old City of Jerusalem is divided into four quarters: The Jewish Quarter, the Armenian Quarter,the Christian Quarter and the Muslim Quarter. Dina and I went mostly to the Christian Quarter, as there was no time to visit the others. We entered the Christian Quarter through the New Gate and saw many churches , the largest of them is the Holy Sepulchre, the smallest a Greek chapel, where Dina and I were welcomed by a Greek nun.(See my post of 24th April)
I'll show three of the seven gates used to enter the Old City. There is an eighth gate, which is sealed. This is the Golden Gate and will be opened when, according to the Christians, the Messiah will enter the city.

Sky Watch, Commemoration of the Dead

The National Monument is a 1956 World War II monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam. A ceremony is held at the monument every year on 4 May to commemorate the casualties of World War II and subsequent armed conflicts.

A semicircular wall surrounds the back side of the monument. The wall contains eleven urns with soil from World War II execution grounds and war cemeteries in each of the Dutch provinces. Three years later, a twelfth urn was added with soil from the Dutch East Indies, present-day Indonesia.

ABC Wednesday, P for Prayer Shawl

This Prayer Shawl of David Ben David survived the fire caused by the Nazis, burning all synagogues in Czechoslovakia, and the sea after the ship which took David Ben David to Israel, was bombed. Later, when David was defending the kibbutz Gush Etzion against the Arabs, it survived the sword.
This Prayer Shawl is a sign of hope and revival.

Our World Tuesday, Dutch Traditions, Queen's Day

Today the Queen celebrates her birthday, although her real birthday is on 31st January. She had chosen this day, because it was her mother's birthday and 31st January is not a day fit for outdoor activities. Queen Beatrix always visits two towns on Queen's Day. Today was a very special day, as the Royal Family was not complete. The Queen's second son is in a hospital in London due to the serious ski accident he was involved in at the beginning of this year.
She is an admirable lady, for she joined the festivities as ever and spoke with many people. In the end she thanked everybody saying that she was grateful for the day, but that it was sad that some members of her family couldn't be here.
Here in my village we had a market, but I stayed at home watching the TV. I had a friend visiting. She brought delicious cakes with orange coloured icing on top, so we had a nice cup of coffee.

Monday Doorways, Israel, Old City

In one of the narrow alleys we saw that this door was open. A sign told us, however, that there was no entry on top of the stairs, because it was private. What does an open door mean to you? For me it is like an invitation to come in and have a chat, or even better to have a cup of coffee.

I added this song of Pete Seeger which was sung today by a great Norwegian crowd in front of the court of law where the lawsuit against Anders Breivik is going on, as a protest to his ideas.Anders Breivik hates this song. He says that children are brainwashed with it.

One day we walked in a woody area outside Jerusalem. It is a beautiful, hilly place. In the distance we could see Hadassah Medical Center high on the hills.Then a little bit further we had a good view of Jerusalem. The sky was clouded with here and there some blue, but we had no rain.

ABC Wednesday, O for Old City in Jerusalem

There are eight gates giving access to the Old City. Seven of them are open to people and even cars. The eighth is called the Golden Gate and is sealed. It will only open on Judgement Day.
It was wonderful to walk in those narrow winding streets and seeing them full of life like 2000 years ago.

The Old City is probably the most interesting part of Jerusalem and the most important site in Israel.
The walls around the Old City are over 400 years old.The Turkish ruler Suleiman The Magnificent was responsible for most of what remains today of the walls, which were constructed during 1538 and 1541. Other parts date back to the Crusaders and even further back to King Herod. The walls represent layer upon layer of history.

Weekend Reflections, Sky Watch, Israel

We made a trip with our group to visit a birds sanctuary at Agamon Hula. It was raining. We were sitting in a kind of railway wagon drawn by a very big tractor. The benches were placed lengthwise. We saw a large number of cranes, which visit this area every year. The rain, the cranes and the water made a wonderful reflection.

Second son of Jacob and Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, and younger full brother of Dan. According to Gen. xxx. 8, the name means "my wrestling," and has reference to the jealous rivalry of the sisters Rachel and Leah. In the Blessing of Jacob the passage which concerns Naphtali has reference to the qualities of the tribe, rather than to those of the individual. "Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words"; i.e., "He is alert, nimble, free-spirited, and has poetical or oratorical gifts" (Driver, Commentary on Genesis, ad loc.).Naphtali was a swift runner and came first to Jacob with the good news that Joseph was alive.

Monday Doorways, Israel

Inspired by a post by Eric Tenin of a Parisian doorway, «Louis» began posting on Mondays photos he had taken of doorways in Paris.To participate click on

The doorway of this Monday is the entrance door of the Jerusalem Great Synagogue. The windows of this synagogue are also worth seeing.

The style of the building was modeled on the Jewish Temple which once stood in Jerusalem. The inauguration took place on Tu B'Av 1982. Naftali Hershtik was appointed the chief cantor of the synagogue, a position he held up to 31 December 2008 succeeded by Haim Adler.

The sanctuary seats 850 men and 550 women.

A comprehensive private collection of mezuzah cases is on show inside the lobby. See post of last week's ABC.

These photos are taken when I was travelling.In Egypt I saw this sunset on the Nile and when I was on my way to Australia in 2008, I saw the sunrise. In July I hope to travel again to Australia to see my new granddaughter.

In the Jerusalem Great Synagogue we saw several showcases displaying all kind of mezuzot. We saw the most beautifully decorated ones fit for the doorposts of palaces.
Wikipedia says:"A mezuzah (Hebrew: מְזוּזָה‎ "doorpost"; plural: מְזוּזוֹת mezuzot) is a piece of parchment (often contained in a decorative case) inscribed with specified Hebrew verses from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21). These verses comprise the Jewish prayer "Shema Yisrael", beginning with the phrase: "Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is One"

A mezuzah is affixed to the doorframe in Jewish homes to fulfill the mitzvah (Biblical commandment) to inscribe the words of the Shema "on the doorposts of your house" (Deuteronomy 6:9). The parchment is prepared by a qualified scribe (a "sofer stam") who has undergone many years of meticulous training, and the verses are written in black indelible ink with a special quill pen. The parchment is then rolled up and placed inside the case."

Good Friday is for me the day that I feel the deepest sorrow and the greatest expectation of a new life after the death of an innocent man, who wanted peace, love of our fellow humans and God's creation. We cannot blame the people of his time to be responsible for this terrible execution. Had he lived now, he would not have been understood either. Humanity has not changed at all. In many countries people are killed because of their religion or convictions. I am fortunate that I live in a country where there is freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. My previous SWF post disappeared. I don't know why, but I put it back in a slightly different way. And of course all 8 comments also disappeared.

The first view every morning from my balcony! Not a very spectacular view, but for me a peaceful and happy atmosphere with birds singing which was the only sound I could here.

I have been back in the Netherlands since last week Thursday, but every day I think of this peaceful place.

ABC Wednesday, K for Kibbutz

A kibbutz is a collective community based on acriculture in Israël. The first kibbutz, Degania Alef, was founded in 1910.

Men and women had to work in the fields, and factories. The children were playing and later studying under the supervision of trained nurses and teachers.
Everything was shared. People didn't get payed for their work, but they had everything they needed, like board and lodging, education. Meals were taken together

In addition to its 350 cow dairy herd, crop fields, almond orchards, banana, date and avocado plantations, Degania Bet industrialized in the 1960s with Degania Sprayers, now a green industry; in 1984 it opened the Degania Silicone factory. An additional source of income is its kibbutz cottage tourist accommodation, and it specializes in organized bicycle tours. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises. Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism and Zionism. In recent decades, some kibbutzim have been privatized and changes have been made in the communal lifestyle.

On our trip to the north of Israel we stayed in the kibbutz Deganya Bet and from this place we took dayly the bus to visit the sights around the Sea of Galilee.
Our group consisted of 44 members.

ABC Wednesday, I for Israel

Last week I went away for a short holiday to Israel, where I am staying at a lodge belonging to Dina's neighbour. Dina met me at the airport and we are going to see first the surroundings and lateron Jerusalem. All photos are not mine as I haven't got the chance to file them in my library yet.
Wikipedia says:"The State of Israel is a parliamentary republic in the Middle East, along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan and the West Bank in the east, and Egypt and the Gaza Strip on the southwest, and it contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area. Israel is defined as a Jewish and Democratic State in its Basic Laws and is the world's only Jewish-majority state.

Following the 1947 United Nations plan to partition Palestine, on 14 May 1948 David Ben-Gurion, the Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization and president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, declared Israel a state independent from the British Mandate for Palestine."

Our World Today Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, H for Hope Vale in Queensland

During the Second World War, Cooktown became an important base for the war effort. The civilian population of Cooktown was encouraged to evacuate in face of the Japanese advances and by 1942 the vast majority had left. The Aboriginal people of the Lutheran missions at Hope Valley and Bloomfield were forcibly removed - most being taken south to Woorabinda in May, 1942, while some of the elderly people were sent to Palm Island. The senior missionary, Pastor Schwartz (known as Muni to the local people), was arrested and placed in internment as he were suspected as being an enemy sympathiser,but he was not an enemy sympathiser, he was German, highly respected and loved by the Aboriginal people, who have been greatly thankful for his efforts to give them a proper home and work and education. The Aboriginal people were not allowed to return to their homelands until 1949, well after the end of the war.They got a new region to build their compound, which was more in the west of Hope Valley. This new abode of the Aboriginal inhabitants is called Hope Vale. Many Aboriginal people died when moved from their traditional lands, and many Aboriginal and white families never returned from their exile.
Yet many of the elderly people are without feelings of revenge. One of the elders once said to me:"I don't feel that I am a VICTIM, I feel that I am a VICTOR".
